I am studying economics. I am interested in understanding what's going on in our economy here in Germany. But I do not know whether studying is the right way.
I have a background in physics. I was assuming that economy is a science like physics. I was wrong. Economy seems to be more an art then a science. In the first courses I learned a lot of models but I never saw any comparison between these models and the reality. Therefore I do not know how good the models really are. I have the impression they are bad. I have the impression that these simple models have another reason. They prepare the student to believe in the free market.
When I ask my professor he is telling me that I will learn the details in the future. But why do I learn at the moment such stuff which does not have any relevance to reality.? Physics is totally different. You learn in the first year the rules of classic mechanics. This enables you to understand more or less everything which you experience in your daily life. Even these models have something to do with reality. There is another method in use in physics which I haven’t seen in economy till today: experiments.
Let’s see what the next courses will bring.
