Does economic have something to do with reality?

Yesterday I learned more about production function. You might notice that I am studying economic. But I am still doing the 101 stuff.
I do not care so much about the theory of the production function. I care more about the question “Do production functions describe in any kind the production of a plant or company?” If the answer to this question is no, why do we analyze this strange functions? If the answer is yes, I would have a reason to learn more about production functions.
As being a trained physicist, I know that such a question is difficult to answer. To my surprise nobody even tried to give us with information out of the reality. The question, whether the production function has something to do with reality was even seen as an uninteresting question. I could not believe it.
I made a test and looked into the introduction books of economic. I could not find a comparison between the production theory and reality.
Is it right that economic does not care whether it has anything to say about reality? I have never seen such a behavior in physics. Sorry, that is not true. String theorists have also the attitude that they do not care so much about the reality
